A colleague referred me to a blog at his college that I wanted to share with you since the students there seem to be at the same point in As I Lay Dying and have some interesting things to say about it.  Check it out–you might even be inspired to comment on their posts!  If you do, please link us to your comment!

This novel is a great novel .. its very intersting and you can imagin the whole scene through the words .. for example, how cash is making her mom’s coffin, how people are walking around Aeidie’s death bed, and what people (Tull, Jewel, Cora, Aidie, Dad, and etc..) are doing all you can picture in your mind and see whats the situation.

JEWEL:
Jewel was the middle child of the Bundrens. He was about 19-years old. According to what Darl says about Jewel, Jewel was Addie Bundren’s favorite. We also found that Jewel’s name had significance behind it since Addie liked him the best out of all her kids. Darl says, “I told them that’s why Ma always whipped him and petted him more. Because he was peakling around the house more. Thats why she named him Jewel I told them” (PG 18). Our group also found Jewel to be a little spoiled and disrespcetful judging from the way he speaks to his brothers and father. However, he also shows an affectionate side towards his mother. He goes out to work hard for money they need to take care of his mother. He’s willing to go out and make money for Addie rather than be at her side when she dies. Cora says, “Not him to miss a chance to make that extra three dollars at the price of his mother’s goodbye kiss. A Bundren through and through, loving nobody, caring for nothing except how to get something with the least amount of work” (PG 22). From this, we see that Cora isn’t too fond of her brother, Jewel, either. Everyone in their family thinks that Jewel finds making money more important than his mother being ill. From reading what we’ve read so far, we concluded that Jewel seemed to be very isolated from his siblings.

Follow this link to a page that gives you many different options to view or download William Faulkner’s  As I Lay Dying.  I would recommend downloading the .PDF version if you want to print pages from this edition.  Keep in mind that the book you will find in the file contains two novels, The Sound and the Fury, which we are not reading, followed by As I Lay Dying, which we are reading.  If you go to page 345, you will find yourself at the start of As I Lay Dying.  If you choose to print, be sure not to print both novels!  Also, you might see if you like printing it two pages per page, so that it looks more like an open book–this will save you paper and might make it easier to carry around.  Even if you have a copy of the novel, you might want to use this full-text version to search the text for a particular name or phrase as you continue to work on it.  Please let me know if you have any trouble using this site.
